“The Big O” Oscar Robertson Robertson was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame two times. Once for his individual career in 1980 and in 2010 as a member of the 1960 United States men's Olympic basketball team. Robertson was voted one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996, won an MVP award in 1964 and an NBA Championship in 1971. He is the only player in NBA history to average a triple double for an entire season. From 1958-1960 as a member of the Cincinnati Bearcats, Robertson dominated the college basketball landscape, being named College Player of the Year and leading the nation in scoring in those three consecutive seasons. His No. 12 is retired by the University of Cincinnati and in 1998, they renamed the trophy awarded to the NCAA Division I Player of the Year the Oscar Robertson Trophy. This honor brought the award full circle for Robertson since he had won the first two awards ever presented. On the inside of the rear left tail is a “MacGregor” size “44” manufacturer’s tag. Adjacent are three tags. One has washing instructions, another is a “CINCINNATI ATHLETIC GOODS” distributor’s tag and the last is a size “XL” tag. Across the front reads “CINCINNATI” in red on white tackle twill. Player number “12” appears on the front and on the back in white tackle twill sewn directly onto the black jersey. After examination of this jersey, all lettering, numbering and tagging appear to be original to the jersey. Under black light inspection, the thread sewn in the jersey lights up. This indicates there is some polyester in the thread. Polyester thread came into existence around 1950. The tackle twill also illuminated from the black light inspection, which leads us to believe that the twill is a combination of cotton and polyester. Included in this lot is a letter of provenance from the consignor who says he acquired this jersey from a University of Cincinnati employee. In our opinion, this jersey is style matched, was presented to us as Oscar Robertson’s and shows excellent use.
