An eight time All-Star, Ernie Lombardi was one of the premier catchers of the early 20th century. The 1938 National League MVP, he twice led the league in hitting with .342 in 1938 and .330 in 42. Hitting .300 or better ten times during his 17 year career, he ended with a lifetime .306. Behind the plate he was equally skilled, using his powerful arm to throw out almost any base runner who dared challenge him by trying to steal second or third. As an interesting aside, it was Lombardi catching for Johnny Van Dermeer when the pitcher threw back to back no hitters. This rare Lombardi bat dates from the last two years of his career showing the 1946-47 labeling period. The M31 model natural finish Hillerich & Bradsby is 36 inches long and weighs 35.5 ounces. It shows evidence of exceptional game use with a taped handle crack. The top left hand side of the barrel is gouged. On the reverse of the hitting area was some grain separation due to repeated ball contact, that has since been repaired. The M31 model was a favorite of Lombardi's during his major league career. He used both 35 inch and 36 inch bats, although records do not indicate a 36 inch M31 in this period.
