“The Red River Rivalry” between Oklahoma and Texas is one of the most famous rivalries in sports. This lot contains the earliest game-used items between the two schools. Originally obtained at the 1915 game, presented is a helmet, pair of pants and gloves worn by a member of the Oklahoma Sooners after their 14-13 victory over Texas. The helmet is a “Rawlings 172” dark brown leather style, which dates to the mid 1910s. Showing heavy wear, the helmet has a small tear near the right ear hole in the interior padding. Inside the rear waistband of the pants is the “Schmelzer KC Mizzou” manufacturers tag. The pants feature wooden thigh pads that are still intact, as well as built in knee and thigh pads. The thigh pads are created of multiple dowels running down the fabric. Also included is a pair of heavily used leather gloves. This uniform is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows appropriate use. The set is accompanied by a letter of provenance from the grandson of the man who attended the game with his father and obtained the pieces that very day.
