Autographed letter penned by Alexander Cartwright, the "father of baseball". Cartwright has penned this letter and signed it “Alexr J. Cartwright”. It is one page, measuring 8” x 10” on lightweight paper, letterpressed copy. It is dated December 30, 1849, Honolulu [Hawaii]. It is addressed to Capt. Cale, ship “Black Sea”. In full, “Your ship having touched upon the windward side of the passage in leaving the harbor (pilot on board) I should advise that you do not go to sea to day, but ___ over till to morrow, that you may have an opportunity of sending down a sealing diver to examine the ship’s bottom and ascertain if she has sustained any apparent damage. A notation of protest will also be necessary.” Uneven left and top margin, light show-through from another document, small spots of ink burn not affecting legibility.
