Henry Louis Gehrig set several major league records including the most career grand slams (23) and most consecutive games played (2,130). Gehrig is chiefly remembered for his prowess as a hitter and his durability, a trait which earned him his nickname "The Iron Horse", as well as the pathos of his farewell from baseball at age 36, when he was stricken with ALS. Gehrig was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. In 1969 he was voted the greatest first baseman of all time by the Baseball Writers' Association and was the leading vote-getter on the Major League Baseball All-Century Team. This receipt from “The National City Bank of New Rochelle” is dated January 4, 1934 in the amount of “Two and no 100” ($2.00). It has been filled out in Gehrig’s hand and signed with his full name, “Henry Louis Gehrig”. The beautiful signature is done in period black fountain pen and in our opinion rates an 8. There is a vertical crease where the receipt was once folded in half, it does not intersect with the signature. “PAID +1+4 34” bank marks have been punched into the receipt and three bank stamps appear on the front; “B/D”, “OFFICIAL TRUST ACCOUNT” and “P.T.” — none affect Gehrig’s signature. The receipt measures approximately 3” x 8” and it is in EX-NM condition. Accompanied by a Full LOA from JSA.
