On February 7th, 1970, Hall of Famer Pete Maravich, LSU's senior guard scored 47 points in the second half against Alabama to finish with 69, setting an NCAA record for most points against a Division I opponent at the time. Maravich broke the record of 68 established by Niagara's Calvin Murphy 14 months earlier. Maravich's scoring outburst against Alabama was far from an outlier. He torched the Tide for 58 points as a sophomore in 1968 and 55 points in 1969. This game-used basketball from that game, sourced directly from the Maravich family, was presented to “Pistol” Pete at the conclusion of the game. Painted on the basketball is “TO PETE MARAVICH IN APPRECIATION FOR WHAT YOU HAVE DONE FOR S.E.C. BASKETBALL THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA FEB. 7 1970”. Stamped into a panel of the Spalding manufactured basketball is “UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA”. An incredible piece of NCAA basketball history from one of the most prolific scorers, the basketball is accompanied by a Maravich family LOA.
