Roberto Clemente was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973 on the first ballot. The 15-time All-Star is a two-time World Series champion and was the World Series MVP in 1971. He was the NL batting champion four times and was named NL MVP in 1966. On the inside of the front button path is a “MacGregor SET 1 1966” manufacturer’s tag. Below is a tag with washing instructions. On the front left tail is “Clemente 42” in swiss embroidery. On the inside below the rear collar is a “MacGregor” size “42” manufacturer's tag. Across the chest reads, “PIRATES”. Player number “21” appears on the front and on the back. All numbering and lettering are done in black felt on yellow felt lettering sewn directly onto the grey flannel jersey. This jersey is properly tagged, was presented to us as game-used and in our opinion shows appropriate use. The jersey is a MacGregor size 42, which is the correct manufacturer for the Pirates road jerseys during this period. The MacGregor tag in the neck area is the proper style and color for the 1965, 1966 and 1967 jerseys. This tag is all original with properly affixed stitching on the sides. The thread is all original with no signs of replacement or restoration. The year tag and washing instructions tag are also properly affixed. This was the customary positioning of these tags by MacGregor for the Pirates and other teams. The “PIRATES” across the chest is in the correct font and placement done in period felt. The top stitching is done in gold with the reverse inside the jersey done in a period light grey. The numerals on the front and back are the correct unique font done by MacGregor and are done in period felt as well. The stitching on the top is done also in gold and the inside stitching is done in a light grey. The shirt shows no visible signs of any number change or alterations. The numerals appears to be original to the jersey. Close observation shows a slightly different hue on the inside grey thread versus the grey done on the “PIRATES” lettering. The name in the tail is done in Swiss embroidery, which may have been done locally by the team during this time frame or possibly by a collector.
