Bill Bevens pitched for the Yankees for four seasons and is best known for his performance in Game 4 of the ‘47 World Series, a.k.a. “The Cookie Game” — one of the most memorable games in baseball history. Bevens pitched 8-2/3 innings of no-hit baseball against the Brooklyn Dodgers and was one out away from being the first pitcher to throw a no hitter in a World Series game. The Yankees led 2-1 with two outs and a man on second base in the bottom of the ninth inning, Bevens intentionally walked Pete Reiser to set up the force out and the Dodgers sent four-time All-Star Harry “Cookie” Lavagetto to pinch-bat for Eddie Stanky. The aging Lavagetto lined a 1-0 fastball from Bevens off of the right field wall bringing in the tying and game-winning run — a crushing defeat for the Bombers. Bevens had a chance for redemption in the deciding Game 7; he delivered with 2-2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Yanks and the team earned their 11th World Championship. This size 14, 14k gold players ring weighs 35 grams. We were told by our consignor that it was presented to Floyd Clifford “Bill” Bevens after he and his New York Yankees teammates won the 1947 World Series. It is different in appearance than other '47 rings that have sold. The top panel reads “NEW YORK YANKEES - WORLD CHAMPIONS” in relief surrounding laurelled leaves and a baseball diamond with a .30-carat round-cut diamond in the center. The left and right panels are identical; each reads “1947” in relief above laurelled leaves and the Yankees top hat logo. The inside of the ring is stamped “DIEGES & CLUST 14 KARAT” and engraved with the player name “BILL BEVENS”. The ring is in MINT condition and is accompanied by an additional LOA stating that the ring was once owned by Barry Halper.
