Lou Gehrig, nicknamed “The Iron Horse” is chiefly remembered for his prowess as a hitter, the longevity of his consecutive games played record and the pathos of his tearful farewell from baseball at age 36. Gehrig set several Major League records throughout his illustrious career with the NY Yankees, most notably his consecutive games played streak of 2,130 which stood for over fifty years. His record for most career grand slams, 23 still stands. In 1969, Gehrig was voted the greatest first baseman of all time by the Baseball Writers' Association and he was the leading vote-getter on the Major League Baseball All-Century Team, chosen by fans in 1999. Gehrig accumulated 1,995 RBI’s in seventeen seasons with a lifetime batting average of .340, a lifetime on-base percentage of .447, and a lifetime slugging percentage of .632. Three of the top six RBI seasons in baseball history belong to Gehrig. He was selected to each of the first seven All-Star games and he won the American League’s Most Valuable Player award in 1927 and 1936. He was also a Triple Crown winner in 1934 and was enshrined in Cooperstown on a unanimous vote in 1939. His number “4” was the first number retired by the NY Yankees. In 1937 Gehrig posted a .357 batting average, clubbed 37 home runs and the Yankees defeated the New York Giants for their sixth World Championship. In 1997, this pair of home pinstripe flannel pants was purchased as part of a full Gehrig uniform that had been sent down to the minors. In the waistband of the pants is the player name “L Gehrig” in faded red chain stitch embroidery with the player number “4” written in faded black marker below. Adjacent to the right is the “SPALDING” manufacturer’s tag. The pants feature a four-button fly and on the inside of the pants, behind the buttons, is the year “37” done in faded red chain stitch embroidery. The numbers “24 1479” and “1306” appear on the inside of the pants written in black ink along with a stapled laundry tag with the number “1306”. The pants are very well worn and feature many small holes throughout the pants as well as several larger ones on the back of the right leg. There also appears to be some green paint splatter on the back of the pants near the waistline and the seat. The pants are properly tagged, were presented to us as game-used and in our opinion, show tremendous use.
